When purchasing a new kitchen range, wall-mounted oven or clothes dryer, these appliances do not include a power cord because the appliance manufacturer does not know what type of receptacle is installed in your home. If your home is new or was built after 1996, the National Electrical Code (NEC) mandates all new home wiring after 1996 use a 4-prong power cord. This code change was made to increase safety by limiting the potential for electrical shock. These cords meet the requirements of the 2020 National Electrical Code.
